Case BIC-SRC-4779

Notice type: Non-compliance

Compliance notice — failure to listen during active communication

Wife (original complainant, now also subject)

Failure to listen to husband's communication while mentally composing a plan to improve communication with husband.

On the evening in question, husband initiated a conversation regarding household logistics. Wife was physically present, maintained eye contact, and nodded at appropriate intervals. However, a post-incident review has determined that wife was not listening. Wife was instead thinking about how to improve communication in the marriage.

0:00 — Husband begins speaking.

0:04 — Wife nods. This is the last moment of genuine listening.

0:05 — Wife begins internally drafting a framework for "more intentional dialogue."

0:12 — Wife mentally outlines a three-point system involving active listening, reflective paraphrasing, and scheduled check-ins.

0:30 — Husband finishes speaking. Wife says "totally." Husband asks what she thinks. Wife suggests they "work on communication."

0:31 — Husband asks what he just said. Wife cannot answer.

BIC Regulation 3.1(a): You cannot improve communication by not communicating. This is a paradox and the Bureau does not process paradoxes. Please resolve internally.

Listen first. Optimize later. If optimization cannot be deferred, at minimum retain enough content to answer the question "what did I just say" within a 10-second window.
