Abstract
Following a facility inspection that located a residence-wide hum and referred it for analysis (BIC-ETH-0107), the Office was asked to identify the low, continuous unease reported by residents on poor terms with someone they love. The source is not the disagreement; it is the attachment beneath it. A bond does not switch off when two people are temporarily not okay. It continues at full strength, its ordinary warmth blocked, and the vibration the residents feel is that. Residents not attached to one another produce no such reading.
Findings
1. Frequency — The hum sits below speech and above silence: low enough to be felt in the chest, too low to point to. It does not vary with the seriousness of what is wrong. A small rift and a serious one produce the same note. Only the duration differs.
2. Source — The vibration belongs to the attachment, not the grievance. The bond does not lower itself to match the mood; it continues at full strength throughout. A resident who had stopped caring would register nothing. The hum is therefore not a sign that something is wrong between the parties. It is the attachment reporting itself still present, at the least convenient moment.
3. Persistence — The hum is not relieved by distraction. It has been reported continuing through work, meals, films, and sleep, because the attachment producing it continues through these as well. It does not observe evenings or weekends. It stops when the parties are okay again, and by no other means.
4. Distribution — The hum is not uniform. It is loudest at the shared bed and the dinner table, and falls to near silence at a single point: a doorway, a parked car, the moment one party steps outside. Parties drift toward that point and describe the movement as needing space.
Conclusions and Bureau adoption
The hum cannot be ended by winning the argument. It ends only when the two parties are okay again, or when the attachment does. Residents distressed by the vibration are advised that it is doing exactly what attachment does, and that the discomfort is a function of the bond being intact rather than failing.
The Office notes, for the record, that the residents who never report this condition are not those who have resolved their relationships. They are those who are no longer attached.
